However, mechanical stimulation is not the only way you can see phosphenes. In this sense, it’s another case of our bodies not being as reliable as we think they are. Pressure on the eyes result in pressure on the retina, which mistakes it for light entering your eyes and so sends a signal to your brain. They’re phosphenes, and they appear because your eyes are still working even after you close your eyes. They’re kind of like the night sky above two of my favourite comic characters.
